On September 13, 2024, Zambia became a focal point for the creative economy as stakeholders gathered to commemorate the 2024 Africa Copyright & Collective Management Day celebrations. This significant event, which is set for 14 September on the ARIPO calendar, aims to raise awareness about copyright issues and promote the rights of creators across the continent.

The event was officiated by Mr. Fumba Chama, Zambia’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Arts. In his opening remarks, Mr. Chama emphasized the importance of education in empowering creators. “Empowerment begins with education. We must ensure our creators are well-informed about their rights and the avenues available to protect and monetise their works,” he stated. This sentiment underscores a growing recognition that knowledge is crucial for artists and creators to navigate the complexities of copyright law and intellectual property rights.

Mr. Benson Mpalo, CEO of the Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA), echoed Mr. Chama’s sentiments during his address. He highlighted that understanding copyright laws is essential for creators to safeguard their work effectively and capitalize on their creative outputs.

Mr. David Njuguna, the Director of Intellectual Property at ARIPO, who spoke on behalf of ARIPO’s Director General, expressed appreciation for the strong turnout from local creators and artists, urging them to engage actively in discussions that could lead to sustainable practices within their industries. He stated that these conversations are vital for “empowering creative industries stakeholders and building a sustainable future for copyright and related rights.” His call to action resonates with ongoing efforts across Africa to strengthen copyright frameworks that support artistic innovation while ensuring fair compensation for creators.

The pre-celebration event served as a platform for dialogue and highlighted Zambia’s commitment to fostering an environment where creativity can thrive through proper legal protections. As ARIPO Member States prepare for the official celebrations on September 14, this gathering marks an important step toward enhancing awareness around copyright issues that affect artists and creators throughout the continent.
