The Twelfth Session of the
Working Group for the improvement of the African Regional Intellectual Property
Organization (ARIPO) Protocols related to Industrial Property commenced today.
This activity brings together critical contributors to the ARIPO regional
system, who include intellectual property (IP) lawyers / agents,
representatives from Member States, and legal and IP experts from the ARIPO
Secretariat. The primary objective of this session is to discuss and propose
enhancements to the existing protocols while ensuring alignment with
international standards and Member State laws.
The diverse group of participants
play essential roles in shaping the intellectual property landscape within
their respective jurisdictions. IP agents bring practical insights from their
experiences in navigating IP laws, while representatives from Member States
contribute perspectives on national interests and compliance with international
agreements. Additionally, legal experts from the ARIPO Secretariat provide
technical guidance on legal frameworks and best practices.
Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, the Director
General of ARIPO, opened the session by encouraging all members to actively
participate in proposing any changes they deem necessary for improving the
intellectual property system in their regions. His call to action emphasizes a
collaborative approach where stakeholders can voice concerns and suggestions.
This inclusive strategy is crucial for developing a comprehensive framework
that addresses both local needs and global trends.
A central theme of this continuous process is the improvement of ARIPO’s protocols to better serve users, innovators, and
creators across the region. The discussions are expected to cover various
aspects, including streamlining application processes, enhancing enforcement
mechanisms, and fostering collaboration among member states. By aligning these
protocols with international standards such as those set by the World
Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), ARIPO aims to create a more robust
framework that supports innovation and creativity.
